Swimming

Oh dear – swimming is definitely my weakest link!

I have been cycling since October 2007 and did The Great Bike Ride (53 kms around the Perth Swan River) in 2007 and again in 2008. So cycling is good.

I have been running since May 2008 and did the 4 km City to Surf fun run in 2008. So running is OK.

But swimming ………….. I went down to the local pool and had a go in December 2008 when I started thinking seriously about doing a triathlon. I hadn’t swum freestyle for 40 years and I could barely make it to the end of the 25 m pool. I was gasping for breath and exhausted after swimming two laps! I have been swimming twice a week since then, and my swimming has progressed, although I would not go so far as to say that I am a good swimmer. I can swim 150 m without stopping, but not super fast. It should be good enough to get me through my first triathlon on 1 March 2009.

My swimming coach on the triathlon training course at Challenge Stadium is fantastic. She is so positive and encouraging and enthusiastic, you can’t help but enjoy her classes. She watches carefully and suggests improvements to technique. We do a combination of drills, sprints and endurance in our weekly one hour class. Lessons take place in one of the two outdoor pools, the 8 lane pool is pictured.

There is some really great information on the internet to help with the training as well. YouTube has lots of videos about training and triathlon transitions. http://www.totalimmersion.net had some good stuff, as did http://www.trinewbies.com/tno_swimming.asp. A Google search turns up heaps of sites to investigate.

I’ve got two weeks to go to my triathlon. I’ll give you an update after the event!
